This article contains officially confirmed information combined with expert industry speculation, rumors, and analysis. We will update this page with the latest news as soon as it’s available.
To understand OD, you need to understand P.T., a playable teaser for a collaboration between developer Hideo Kojima, actor Norman Reedus, and iconic filmmaker Guillermo del Toro to produce a new Silent Hill game. Sadly, this game would disappear into the rift formed by Kojima’s sudden departure from Konami, but fans have remained hopeful ever since to see a Kojima-led horror game.
This is why fans were so excited to hear about OD, Hideo Kojima’s next game in collaboration with director Jordan Peele. Since its reveal at the 2023 Game Awards, information has been sparse, until, as part of developer Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary livestream, we received some news on upcoming projects from the studio, including some much-awaited information in the form of a three-minute teaser trailer.
Expected OD release date
It is important to say upfront that we have no OD game release date, though we can speculate. The fact that we have any news at all since its unveiling in 2023 is a positive sign, however, and leads us to expect we will not be waiting two more years at the very least. Kojima has also made clear that his next project, Physint, will “take another five or six years,” having entered full development as of the release of Death Stranding 2.
We estimate that OD will release before then, especially as its development predates Physint, putting the release likely within the next 4 years.
We predict a potential release window between 2027 and 2028, assuming no major delays or issues. An update of this length and quality is certainly reassuring. We can only keep our fingers crossed that we might hear more at the Game Awards this year, especially as Death Stranding 2 will likely be up for a nomination.
OD gameplay and trailer analysis
The trailer itself is a showcase of what the game looks like in the Unreal engine, a noteworthy choice for Kojima Productions, as it used Guerrilla Games’ proprietary engine, Decima, for Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2. Details are sparse in terms of OD video game gameplay, though the trailer seems to showcase a clear mystery element.
The trailer takes place from the perspective of a character played by Sophia Lillis. She receives a card telling her to light some candles for a reason kept obscured. As this happens, text appears on screen. Largely redacted, the text explains that it’s been “10 years since” a foreboding ‘Horror”. Unsettling mentions of a “sinister ritual” and a mysterious “3D scan” then ensue.
We then see our protagonist light some of the candles, with some taking on eerie shapes, such as a baby; the sound of a baby crying can then be heard as it burns. We then hear a door open, and something creeps behind Sophia Lillis’ character while strange marks appear on her face and neck. The title then flashes as a cryptic image seen below closes out the trailer, accompanied by a chilling scream.
OD setting and story analysis
Kojima Productions’ OD game details are sparse. That said, besides the content of the trailer, we do have a little extra info. A notable motif carried through the little news we have seen so far has been the sound of a Geiger counter. This is used to measure nuclear radiation, and some have theorised that the strange marks could also be a manifestation of some kind of exposure.
The text mentions the building is something from a 3D scan, which fans have suggested could imply the building featured in the trailer was damaged by some form of nuclear horror.
Some also theorise that a form of AI could be involved. The first trailer featured strange talking heads of three of our characters spouting incomprehensible sentences. This could just be Hideo Kojima’s way of introducing the cast he has for this game; however, with the mention of the 3D scan, perhaps there is some deeper digital horror. The OD horror game could well be an unforgettable horror experience.
OD expected price
The expected price of this game is hard to predict, especially as game prices have begun to change in the last couple of years. However, Death Stranding 2 released at $69.99 (£65), so we expect OD to release at a similar price point. The game is also being worked on alongside Xbox Studios, so the game may well also be available on Xbox Game Pass in some form.
OD platforms
Regarding potential OD video game platforms, Kojima Productions has confirmed that the title will be a Microsoft exclusive. This is hardly surprising, as OD is being made in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios. This means that players will likely be able to play on Xbox Series X|S and PC when it releases.
What makes OD different?
Back in 2014, P.T. stood out from the crowd. It promised horror brilliance wrapped in a fascinating core concept. Seeing it cancelled was more than a little disappointing.
With this in mind, it’s more than a little exciting to see Hideo Kojima return to horror with the upcoming OD game, not to mention that he’s doing so alongside horror icon Jordan Peele. So far, OD’s two trailers have captured a surreal feeling of unease that many agree has not been felt by fans since P.T. This horror project could finally realise a dream so many fans have wanted desperately.
