  • The game will highlight Wolverine’s complex morality, loyalty, and inner conflict, portraying him as a violent but deeply human antihero with significant ties to the broader Marvel universe.

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine announcement alongside Spider-Man 2 back in 2021 has left fans beyond excited to see more of what this legendary studio can bring to the Marvel universe. It has certainly been a long four years, and excluding leaks, there has been very little news.

With what has been shown more recently, courtesy of a trailer broadcast during the September 2025 State of Play, a new wave of excitement is brewing. With brutal and stylish action and the potential for major Marvel cameos, the trailer certainly left us excited for Marvel’s Wolverine. Read on as we break down the trailer, gameplay, and everything else we know about Insomniac’s next big release.

Expected Marvel’s Wolverine release date

Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 release date has a confirmed release window of Fall 2026. As for the exact date, we can only rely on speculation. Because Spiderman 1 + 2 had fall release dates, we can make a limited prediction based on that. The most likely outcome is that Wolverine could be released in September or October 2026. As with any game, delays are possible, and these could push back the release date. Until an official release date is confirmed, this is purely speculative.

Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay and trailer analysis

The first shot in the trailer tracks Wolverine’s brutal take-down of an enemy, brought to life by new, bespoke Insomniac blood technology. Their commitment to putting Wolverine’s brutality front and centre is clear. We also glean some information on the actor playing Wolverine, Liam McIntyre, whose passion for the role is clearly evident. He’s no stranger to superhero IPs, having played Weather Wizard in CW’s The Flash.

What we saw of Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay looked brutal and intense, though Insomniac has confirmed some additional details on how healing will function. Mainly, risk does have a reward, as your healing will depend on your combos. What this will look like specifically is yet to be seen, but players will likely be heavily immersed during their time as Wolverine.

A few key elements also stand out. Firstly, we return to the bar seen in the initial 2021 announcement trailer. This bar is notably in the nation of Madripoor and appears to serve as a backdrop for some of the game. The trailer also showcases other locations, including a snowy area. How these areas will link together is not made clear.

The trailer also reveals three main characters in Marvel’s Wolverine. Omega Red is seen forcing Wolverine to the ground using Dr Octopus-esque tentacles. In the comics, he is a Soviet Mutant turned serial killer driven mad by KGB experimentation, leveraging technology to enhance his mutant abilities. There is also Mystique, one of the most famous X-Men villains and antiheroes. Her shapeshifting ability is the cause of all kinds of espionage-based chaos in the movies and comics. As she is seen killing the same grunts as Wolverine, she may prove an unlikely ally. Lastly and most notably is the Sentinel. These highly effective mutant death machines are poised to be a boss encounter, and suggest the political implications of mutants will be front and centre.

Marvel’s Wolverine expected price

The expected release price for Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 is $69.99, which aligns with the release price of Spider-Man 2. However, with recent Nintendo price increases, a bump to $79.99 is possible. When a release price is confirmed, we will update accordingly.

Marvel’s Wolverine platforms

Insomniac Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment are developing this game, so Marvel’s Wolverine platform is the PS5. However, this is potentially only for a limited time, as we could see it make its way onto PC a few years down the line, much like Spider-Man and other PS5 exclusives, such as The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima. This is currently unconfirmed, so take it with a good dose of salt before PlayStation confirms it.

Marvel’s Wolverine setting and story analysis

Wolverine’s signature trait is that he is a mutant and one of the most famous X-Men. As the trailer ends on a shot of a Sentinel, we expect the politics of mutant persecution to play some role in the story. However, it will likely go much deeper than that, as Bolivar Trask (a character from the 90s X-Men cartoon and the inventor of Sentinels) is in the game.

The grunts Wolverine takes down in the trailer are also confirmed to be the Reavers. In the comics, they are a group of cyborgs who are at odds with the X-Men, mainly Wolverine. However, here they appear to be a more general militia. They also seem to be hired by Trask’s company, who probably also hired Omega Red.

How Madripoor and other locations will factor in is still to be seen. Marvel’s Wolverine appears to have a semi-open world hub system more akin to Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. There is ample room for interesting locations, such as the mutant nation of Genosha.

Insomniac has also hinted that Wolverine’s memories, or lack thereof, will be a significant plot point. If you’ve read the comics, you’ll know there is a lot that is not pretty about Wolverine’s past, giving Insomniac tons of material to work with, with possibly a deeper dive into conspiracies and other interesting story elements. There is too long to wait to learn more, thankfully, as Insomniac has confirmed the next Marvel’s Wolverine development update for next spring.

The aspect of Wolverine people love the most is his complexity, a point Insomniac seems keen to emphasise. As explained in the trailer, “he’s an unreliable narrator” with a complex moral compass. His comic book history goes deep with connections to Captain America.

While Wolverine won’t hesitate to kill, beneath the gruff exterior is a heart of gold (or maybe adamantium?). He is a character who would stop at nothing to save his friends. Wolverine is one of the most loyal X-Men, as fans of Days of Future Past or Logan will know. His relationship, or even lack of, with the X-Men in Marvel’s Wolverine is undoubtedly something to be excited about.
