The Ghost of Yotei Undying Samurai quest will take you to the northern part of Ishikari Plain, north of Nakagoya Spring, where you’ll find Ugetsu the Storyteller. A samurai that can’t be killed? Ugetsu is keen to cook up a fresh yarn, and he’s enlisted Atsu to do the heavy lifting.

This involves tracking down four chimes left by the eponymous samurai near his victims. Here’s where to find Ugetsu and all four The Undying Samurai chimes in Ghost of Yotei.

You’ll find Ugetsu the Storyteller at Storyteller’s Rest, which is located just west of the Twin Path Fox Den and right next to the Masked Man’s Quarry. If you open up the Ghost of Yotei map and track the quest, you’ll get a search area that should guide you right to him.

To cut a long story short, a prideful samurai is roaming the valley looking for a warrior strong enough to defeat him and break the curse that haunts his armor and prevents him from dying. Ugetsu explains that “Where four wind chimes sing, the samurai appears.” To find him, you’ll need to find the four Undying Samurai chimes and the place where they all sing. Sounds cryptic, but we’ll walk you through it all.

First Undying Samurai chime location

The first Undying Samurai chime location is on a lone tree just north of Ugetsu’s camp and immediately ahead of you after he finishes explaining the finer details of the samurai’s cursed fate. Deal with the bear next to the corpse then grab the chime with the teal ribbon attached that’s hanging from the tree branch. You can use the wind chime by swiping up on the Touch Pad. Move around and you’ll notice that the wind picks up and the ringing intensifies when facing a certain direction; this will lead you to the next chime.

Second Undying Samurai chime location

The second chime required for The Undying Samurai quest is up on the hill south of Storyteller’s Rest. It’s just above the second ‘A’ in Nakagoya Spring if you zoom in fully on the map. It’s next to another lone tree, marked by a teal ribbon. Refer to the image above for the exact spot. The chime is hanging from a Yari planted in a samurai’s corpse.

Third Undying Samurai chime location

The third chime is located on a small island in the middle of Rumoi River just north of the Defiant Roots Sumi-e. Look for the large field of purple flowers; it’s more or less in the middle of it. Again, it’s next to a lone tree; however, this time you’ll need to talk to the ronin inspecting a samurai’s corpse. Fight him and then loot his body to get the chime.

Fourth Undying Samurai chime location

The fourth and final Undying Samurai chime is found in the southeast of the search area, north of Ishikari Castle, and south of the third chime. It’s located up on a cliff just below the final “T” in Stone Jaw Coast if you zoom in on the map.

Though you can climb up the cliff, it’s much quicker to head southeast and then ride up the hill west to reach the spot on horseback. Look out for another tree sanding by itself with a samurai corpse hanging from its branches. Get as close to the cliff edge as you can, then hold R2, L2, and then down on L3 to release the corpse. Scale down to the ledge and grab the chime.

“Where the chimes sing” location

Swipe up on the Touch Pad, and the wind will lead you to a cliff overlooking the sea in the northwest of the quest search area. It’s in the west of the Rumoi River region, northwest of the Old Wound Wolf Den and north of the Shamisen Practice spot. Again, look out for a single tree at the top of the hill. Once there, use the grappling point to make your way down the cliff and into a cave to reach the Undying Samurai’s lair.

Place the chimes on the four sticks to summon the Undying Samurai. Defeat him to complete the quest and earn the rather swish Armor of the Undying, the Helmet of the Prideful, and the Mask of the Prideful set.
