Is Death Stranding 2 stuttering driving you mad? I’ve been there. Ferrying precious cargo across Mexico and Australia to the rhythm of a staccato stutter and choppy audio cutouts is a potent recipe for frustration. It really saps the fun out of the experience. Restarting your console might fix the issue for a bit, but it always comes back.
While playing for our review, I bashed my head against the wall and had a bit of a meltdown trying to find a solution to the stuttering so you don’t have to go through the same thing. It turns out the problem isn’t with the game itself but with the PS5. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to fix Death Stranding 2 stuttering for good.
Death Stranding 2 stuttering fix
To fix the stuttering problem, you’re going to have to dive into the belly of your console. Not in the sense that you need to physically crack it open and fiddle about with a screwdriver, but more go in for some targeted TLC in Safe Mode. Before we begin, make sure you have the latest system software update installed:
- Head to Settings, System, System Software, then System Software Update and Settings.
- Tap Update System Software and select Update Using Internet.
- Let the update install if there is one.
If the console is up to date, follow these steps to fix the stutter issue:
- Turn off your PS5 then pull out the power cord (not just from the mains but from the console itself) and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. The idea here is to drain all the power from the components and circuitry, giving it a bit of electrical reset.
- Reconnect your PS5 then hook up your DualSense controller to the console via USB.
- Press the on button on your PS5 (not the PS logo on the controller) then hold it for roughly seven seconds until you hear a second bleep to enter Safe Mode.
- Tap the PS logo on your controller when prompted.
- Navigate down to Repair Console Storage then confirm and let the machine do its thing.
After the repair is complete, the system will punt you back to the usual PS5 intro screen. Load up Death Stranding 2 and the stuttering should be a thing of the past.
