Ferrying everything from Cryptobiote figurines to life-saving medical equipment between facilities, distribution centres, and preppers is hard work. All that walking, running, climbing, leaping, fighting off bandits, scaling slopes, and heaving cargo drains Sam’s stamina and, in some cases, can deplete his blood level. Mismanage stamina and you’ll trigger fatigue, reducing the size of the stamina gauge and affecting Sam’s ability to balance and cross ankle-mashing terrain safely.

To remedy this loss of stamina and health, you can opt to take a short break to recoup your energy. This can be done both in facilities via private rooms but also when you’re out in the wilds of Mexico and Australia. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to rest in Death Stranding 2.

How to rest outside in Death Stranding 2

To rest in Death Stranding 2, hold the Square button until the ‘Rest’ dial fills up. You can do this anywhere and on any type of terrain though you’ll have to be outside of combat and away from any bandit/brigand/BT enemies or areas.

Sam will take a seat and refill his stamina bar. This shouldn’t take long depending on how depleted your stamina is at that current point. Note that to completely overcome fatigue and fully replenish the stamina gauge, you will have to rest in a Private Room at a facility or onboard the DHV Magellan.

You’ll also see several options when resting: stand, switch camera, massage shoulders, and sleep. If you hold down Square to sleep, the screen will fade to black, time will pass, and Sam will refill his blood level and stamina gauges.

There’s also a neat little secret: stay resting long enough and Sam will fall asleep without you having to tap the button prompt. A dream-like spectre of Lou will eventually start hovering in the air around him using the adorable flapping wings on the back of his baby onesie.

After resting or sleeping, a small Cairn will pop-up, which other players can see and interact with. Resting near Cairns lets you recover stamina and blood level quicker. Over time and if lots of players rest at a Cairn, it can grow to be massive and grant even better recovery speeds when resting.

How to rest in a Private Room in Death Stranding 2

Aside from taking a break out in the wild, you can also rest in a Private Room. These are available at larger facilities (and on the DHV Magellan) andtypically have a ramp leading down to an elevator and Delivery Terminal. Stand on the elevator circle then hold Square to enter the Private Room. When you decide to return to the surface, Sam’s stamina and blood level will be fully restored.
