Death Stranding 2 Hot Springs add yet another way to instantaneously traverse the massive Australia region by using the underground tar currents to ‘jump’. Unlike DHV Magellan and Transponder Beach Jumps, there’s a bit of groundwork involved in setting up Hot Spring fast travel, namely that you have to track down suitable spots and build them using the Hot Spring Digger. To make it a little more worth your while, Hot Springs confer all manner of temporary buffs.

It’s entirely possible to beat the game without even coming across a Hot Spring (we accidentally stumbled into one while reviewing the game), let alone build you’re on, which you’ll need to do to unlock the Spring Into Life trophy. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get the Hot Spring Digger, how to use it to build a Hot Spring, and all the Hot Spring locations in Death Stranding 2.

How to get the Hot Spring Digger

To unlock the Hot Spring Digger, you’ll need to progress the main story until you complete Main Order Order 026 at The Motherhood facility during Episode 7 Pod. You then need to bathe in the Hot Spring called Miracle Spring just west of The Motherhood and choose to put the bucket on Sam’s head when given the option. This will unlock Hot Spring fast travel along with the Hot Spring Digger – a device that detects heated groundwater and digs Hot Springs – during a short visit back to Heartman’s Lab and a chat with The Hydrologist.

How to use the Hot Spring Digger

To use the Hot Spring Digger, make sure you have a PCC Lv2 in your inventory, then hold the right D-Pad button to bring up the Weapons/Tools radial menu. Select the PCC Lv2 under Tools and then choose the Hot Spring Digger from the structure options.

When Sam pulls out the digger, hold L2 to aim and the device will emit a sound that indicates the direction and distance of a water source suitable for a Hot Spring location. The sound intensifies the closer you are to a water source and there’s also an on-screen Hydrothermal Sensor Reading that indicates the proximity with Null, Faint, and Strong readings.

The idea is to aim in several directions until you get a positive Faint or Strong reading then move towards it until you find a suitable spot. When you do find a water source, the digger hologram will turn blue, allowing you to build a Hot Spring by tapping R2. However, there are only a limited number of suitable locations as we detail below.

All Death Stranding 2 Hot Spring locations

Here’s a list of Hot Springs in Death Stranding 2 along with their exact locations and supporting images to help you find them. Note that they can only be found in the Australia region and not in Mexico. After building each of the Hot Springs, make sure to return to The Hydrologist at Heartman’s Lab to earn rewards tht improve the effects of soaking in a Hot Spring.

Miracle Spring

  • Benefit – heals HP

You’ll find the Miracle Spring just west of The Motherhood facility in the very far northeast of Australia. You’ll first come across it during Order 026 in Episode 7 Pod. Unlike most other Hot Springs, this one doesn’t need to be built using a Hot Spring Digger.

Heartman’s Spring location. Captured by VideoGamer

Heartman’s Spring

  • Benefit – boosts stamina

Heartman’s Spring is conveniently located inside Heartman’s Lab in the north of Australia. You can access it for the first time during Order 026 in Episode 7 Pod by bathing in the Miracle Spring next to The Motherhood and popping the bucket on Sam’s head. Like the Miracle Spring, you won’t need to build this one.

Metallic Spring

  • Benefit – Repairs cargo containers
  • Reward – Yuzu

The Metallic Spring is found just up the mountain west of The Chronobiologist facility in the Snowy Mountain at the centre of Australia. You can first reach it during Order 032 in Episode 8 Deluge. Pull out a Hot Spring Digger, aim it up the mountain, and follow the signal up to a small cliff with an empty pond on top of it. If you report back to The Hydrologist at Heartman’s Lab, you’ll get the Yuzu Hot Spring Essential as a reward, which temporarily improves cold resistance, ideal for trekking through the mountains.

Chiral Spring

  • Benefit – Temporarily carry heavier cargo loads
  • Reward – Chiral Tea

The Chiral Spring is located on the ridge to the southeast of The Dowser in the direction of Heartman’s Lab in the northwest of Australia. Building it is also an Aid Request from The Chronologist, which makes this one easy to find. Report back to The Hydrologist to get the Chiral Tea Hot Spring Essential, which temporarily boosts Sam’s maximum stamina level.

Recharging Spring

  • Benefit – Recharges batteries
  • Reward – Eucalyptus Leaves

You’ll find the Recharging Spring in the valley to the southwest of the Phantom Smith and north of BPAS in the southern portion of the Snowy Mountains. You can reach it after completing Order 038 at the Eastern Environmental Observatory during Episode 9 Puppets. Head back to The Hydrologist to unlock the Eucalyptus Leaves Hot Spring Essential, which temporarily boosts Sam’s stamina replenishment rate.

Clairvoyant Spring

  • Benefit – Improves Sam’s ability to spot cargo, signs, and structures
  • Reward – Ludens Ducks

The Clairvoyant Spring is located to the east of The Phantom Smith and north of the Brigands camp in the area. Look for a small rocky pond in the middle of the snow. You can get to it as soon as Order 038 in Episode 9 Puppets. Remember to go back to The Hydrologist to unlock the Ludens Ducks.

Healing Spring

  • Benefit – Restores stamina and removes fatigue
  • Reward – Apples

You’ll find the Healing Spring just north of the Animal Shelter near the edge of the cliff. It’s dead easy to get to. You can unlock this one as soon as you have the Hot Spring Digger after reaching The Motherhood. Head back to The Hydrologist to get the Apples Hot Spring Essential, which restores Sam’s blood levels.

Tar Spring

  • Benefit – Temporarily harder for BTs to detect you
  • Reward – Sweet Flag Leaves

The Tar Spring is located just below the rocky ridge immediately south of The Tar Therapist at the foot of the Snowy Mountains in the east of Australia. The best time to build the spring is just after completing Order 41 in Episode 9 Puppets. Report back to The Hydrologist to get the Sweet Flag Leaves, which temporarily makes it harder for BTs to detect Sam’s presence.

Digestive Spring

  • Benefit – Boost the effects of canteen and cryptobiotes
  • Reward – Tangerines and Kangaroo Hologram Data

You’ll find the Digestive Spring northeast of The Lone Commander on the edge of the cliff overlooking the crater Tar Lake. You can also reach it by heading west from the F5 Distribution Centre. Jump back to The Hydrologist to unlock the Tangerines, which temporarily boost the restorative effect of drinking from the canteen and eating cryptobiotes. You’ll also receive the Kangaroo Hologram Data.

I’m pretty certain that’s all of the Death Stranding 2 Hot Springs, but I’ll nip back into this guide if I come across any more.
