Death Stranding 2 fast travel makes traversing the vast maps of Mexico and Australia significantly easier, not to say faster than in a ground vehicle or on Sam’s tired trotters. It, however, doesn’t unlock immediately and you’ll need to push through a good portion of the story before it’s available. But, once it is, you’ll not only have the option to move around instantaneously, you can also take cargo with you unlike in the original Death Stranding.

It’s a great way to revisit previously visited locations, especially to complete repeatable Standard Orders to raise your connection level with facilities and preppers in both Mexico and Australia to unlock new rewards and upgrades. It’s a great help so in this guide we’ll walk you through how to unlock and use fast travel in Death Stranding 2.

How to unlock fast travel

To unlock fast travel, you’ll need to progress the story through to Episode 3 Drawbridge, which involves using a plate gate to travel to Australia. Once you’re there, push on until near the end of the chapter where you get Order 012 Investigate the Unusual Tar Currents near F1. Head over to West Fort Knot (F1) and defeat the mech boss outside.

Interact with the West Fort Kno5 (F1) Delivery Terminal to complete the order, then exit the facility. This will trigger a cut scene with Fragile where she explains the DHV Magellan can now be used to fast travel between facilities and other locations in Australia and Mexico.

Depending on how long you spend in Mexico, getting fast travel should take around 10-12 hours. We don’t recommend staying too long in Mexico to try and get a five star connection level with all facilities. You’ll unlock much better gear in Australia, not to mention fast travel, that you can take back to Mexico to make unlocking full stars much easier.

How to fast travel in Death Stranding 2

To fast travel, tap the Menu button on your PS5 controller to bring up the pause menu then hold X while viewing the map to bring up the Chart Course fast travel menu. Hover over the facility you want to fast travel to then press X and confirm. The DHV Magellan will now travel to the selected location and if you’re onboard you’ll go along with the ship. Any cargo you’re carrying on your person or have onboard a vehicle parked inside the DHV Magellan will go with you as well.

If you do decide to transport cargo using fast travel, you’ll receive what’s called a Magellan evaluation for orders, which is effectively a small penalty on the number of likes you’ll receive. You’ll keep all your weapons and gear when fast travelling between major regions.

Fast travel locations are marked on the map by an icon of the DHV Magellan. As you progress through the story and connect more facilities to the Chiral Network, you’ll get access to more in what Tarman considers safe locations. There are no limits on how often or how much you can fast travel other than the occasional story section that restricts it so you can use the feature as much as you want.

Transponder fast travel explained

Once you’ve completed Order 023 in Australia, you’ll unlock the Transponder, a system which allows you to move vast distance instantaneously, though you can’t take cargo or vehicles with you like you can with the DHV Magellan. They transport Sam via the Beach, using what’s called Beach Jump, to any location with a similar Transponder, mainly facilities and observatories. These locations are makred on the map by an umbrella icon.

To use a transponder, interact with the Delivery Terminal at any facility connected to the Chiral Network, then select Facility Features and Beach Jump. Choose where you want to jump on the map and confirm. Alternatively, you can build a standalone Transponder out in the wild using a PCC Lv2 or add one to a Safehouse. Once built, they function in exactly the same way.

You can only fast travel between Hot Springs and other than the ones at The Motherhood and inside Heartman’s Lab, you’ll need to build them yourself using a Hot Sprint Digger to dowse for groundwater the construct the bath. There are a total of 9 Hot Springs locations. Once that’s done, simply bathe in a Hot Spring, put the bucket on Sam’s, and choose a destination.
