As a reward for completing Order 033 and safely delivering the Timefall-resistant Emu, The Metagenomicist will reward you with a new type of ordinance called the EX Capture Grenade. Like normal grenades, this one is designed to damage enemies but if used the right way can capture large Catcher-type BTs, letting you summon them like otherworldly Pokemon against other BTs. They do this by crystallising the physical core of a Catcher into a BT Crystal you can handily carry around with you.
It’s a neat tool that expands your BT-fighting arsenal further but is a bit obtuse to use with only superficial guidance from the game. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use the EX Capture Grenade and catch BTs in Death Stranding 2 On The Beach.
How to catch BTs with the EX Capture Grenade
To use an EX Capture Grenade to capture a Catcher BT, you’ll first need to lower its health bar until it turns red. This is roughly about two-thirds of the way through its health pool. Once that’s done, wait for the BT to open its mouth – this usually precedes an attack – then get close and throw an EX Capture Grenade into the creature’s open mouth. The window for what’s considered the creature’s mouth is pretty generous, so as long as you lob it at the BTs front, it will work.
If done correctly, you’ll trigger a short slow motion sequence and the Catcher will calcify then melt into a rain of white particles, leaving behind a white BT crystal on the ground. Pick up the BT Crystal to capture the BT for future use as a temporary ally against other BTs. The Crystal is merged with Sam’s DOOMs blood to create a BT Core – basically a receptacle for the captured BT. It doesn’t take up any space in your backpack and doesn’t need to be carried.
A good place to practice all this is in the BT area to the south of The Metagenomicist’s shelter. We’ve marked the location on the map in the image above. Here, you’ll find a large Octopoid Catcher BT to try the grenade out on.
How to use a BT Core in Death Stranding 2
To use a BT Core, hold right on the D-Pad to bring up the Weapons/Tools radial menu, then go to the Special section in the bottom left, and cycle through to the BT Crystal and tap X to summon it. There are, however, some limits to when and how you use a BT Crystal summon, as follows:
- You can only summon BT Crystals inside BT areas.
- Summoning a BT consumes Chiral Crystals so make sure you have a stockpile with you
- BT Crystals are reusable, but a specific type of BT can only be summoned once per engagement. If you have two or three types, you can use all three in the same fight, just not the same one twice.
If you meet all these criteria, the BT will appear and fight alongside you, targeting other BTs and never attacking Sam. They are particularly useful in engagements against other large BTs. Overtime you can amass a decent arsenal of different BT Crystal types to summon as and when you need them.
