Hot on the heels of Black Myth Wukong’s stratospheric success among players who like their games challenging and stacked to the rafters with villainous bosses, developer Game Science has announced a sequel. Dubbed Black Myth Zhong Kui, it promises more of the same while dipping into a different portion of the rich pool of Chinese mythology.
It’s still early days, and we’ve yet to see any meaty details come out of Game Science. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Black Myth Zhong Kui.
- Black Myth Zhong Kui doesn’t have a release date yet.
- The game is in early development.
- Only a CGI teaser trailer has been released so far.
- The game centers on the classic Chinese myth of Zhong Kui.
Expected Black Myth Zhong Kui release window

As it stands, developer Game Science has yet to share a release window, let alone a release date for Black Myth Zhong Kui. The game is still in early development, indicating that a release is still quite a way off. Realistically, we could be looking at several years before it lands in the hands of players.
Black Myth Wukong took six years to develop, though it was the studio’s first non-mobile game, which means teething issues that likely won’t be as pronounced for Black Myth Zhong Kui. Speaking speculatively, we could see a release in three to five years.
Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay and trailer analysis
As expected, given Black Myth Zhong Kui’s early development state, Game Science has only released a short teaser trailer so far. Heavy on rendered CGI, it doesn’t feature any gameplay or in-game footage. Two men bicker inside a collapsing shack before two demons and a tiger ridden by the titular Zhong Kui. The camera pans out to reveal a fog-bathed, mountainous backdrop similar to those found in Black Myth Wukong. Fade to black, the game’s title pops on the screen, and that’s it.
Trailer aside, Game Science has confirmed that Black Myth Zhong Kui is a single-player action RPG in the same vein as Black Myth Wukong. Though speculative, we do expect a rich cast of bosses.
Expected Black Myth Zhong Kui price

With not even a glimpse at gameplay, there are unsurprisingly no details around an expected Black Myth Zhong Kui price. However, we expect it to follow in Black Myth Wukong’s footsteps and retail for around $60 for our American friends and £50 for us in the rainy UK.
This is speculative, though, so take it with a good ol’ pinch of salt. We could see Game Science following the industry trend of increasing prices. We also can’t discount inflation muscling in between now and release to hike prices.
Black Myth Zhong Kui setting and story analysis

Black Myth Zhong Kui draws inspiration from the classic Chinese folk hero, Zhong Kui, whose tragic tale sees him take on the role of the king of ghosts. How closely the game will adhere to the myth remains to be seen, but we imagine it will draw liberally from Chinese folklore and mythology to enrich the game’s themes, characters, and story.
As for the setting, nothing has been revealed yet, but it will almost certainly take place in ancient China, or an interpretation of it. In the short announcement trailer, we catch a glimpse of a mountainous region similar to those in Wukong.
How will Black Myth Zhong Kui improve on Black Myth Wukong?

It’s difficult to say with any certainty at this point, given how little we know about the game. However, as Black Myth Zhong Kui is Game Science’s second release in the Black Myth series, we imagine lessons learned during Wukong’s development will be applied here. This will likely result in refinements and enhancements to various mechanics, combat, quality-of-life elements, and visuals. We should know much more once Game Science offers us a first look at in-game footage and gameplay.
