  • Launching Black Myth: Wukong in Compatibility Mode disables several settings that can cause errors, stuttering,  black screens, and more.
  • In our opinion, you should only use Compatibility Mode after you have exhausted all other options to fix the issues, such as lowering graphics settings.

While Black Myth: Wukong was released both for PlayStation 5 and PC, the computer version comes with an extra launch option. You can choose to launch the game normally, or by using the Compatibility Mode. This mode is meant for players who encounter problems with regular launch option, so let’s go into what that encapsulates.

What is the Compatibility Mode in Black Myth: Wukong?

If you choose to launch Black Myth: Wukong on PC through Compatibility Mode, your game will start with certain graphics features disabled. This can be beneficial if you’ve encountered black screens, stuttering, glitches, and other issues when starting the game normally.

While Game Science didn’t release a full feature list for Compatibility Mode, we can tell that some of the settings are completely deactivated or employed to allow players with weaker rigs to start the game. For instance, V-Sync is active by default to prevent screen tearing, but this comes at the price of lower frame rates. Meanwhile, some high-end settings are completely off, including advanced GPU anti-aliasing options.

Should you play Black Myth: Wukong in Compatibility Mode?

We suggest that you do not use the Compatibility Mode to play the game, at least until you have ruled out every other possibility of running the game normally. Try to adjust settings first and make sure that your game can run that way.

✓ Pro tip

Also, if you haven’t already, install the game on an SSD drive, which can prevent a lot of stuttering issues that you may think are caused by the GPU.

If you encounter errors and black screens even after lowering settings, then you can try launching the game in Compatibility Mode. Under those circumstances, you should have a smoother time playing the game. It might not look as impressive as on stronger rigs, but you’ll at least be able to enjoy the game.

However, even the Compatibility Mode won’t be a band-aid solution for some weaker PCs. Some players with truly outdated computers have reported stuttering and errors even when running in this mode. Unfortunately, that is the fault with outdated hardware that simply isn’t strong enough to support the game.
