Disney Lorcana is turning a lot of heads in the trading card game space. It’s a big deal if Disney is involved, and the game is also fun to boot. If you’re looking at getting into Disney Lorcana, but you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got you covered. Disney released an introductory set of starter decks. If you’re like me, you want to know what the best Disney Lorcana starter decks are.
There are three starter decks in total for The First Chapter, each with a different color combination and play style. Each of these decks are all fun to play and can be built up to be very competitive. We’re going to evaluate each deck as you would play it right out of the box for its competitiveness and ease of use. With that being said, let’s dive in!
3. Best Disney Lorcana starter decks – Steel / Sapphire (Aurora and Simba)
The worst of the three Disney Lorcana starter decks that we’re going to talk about is the one headed by Aurora and Simba, or Steel and Sapphire. If you’re familiar with resource based card games, then this deck is the ramp deck of the lot. The deck aims to get a lot of ink in their inkwell quite quickly with the goal of playing big, beefy characters. If you get to that point in the game, the deck is a boulder rolling downhill, it’s really hard to stop.
The downside of this deck is that there aren’t a large amount of ramp cards in the deck, making this strategy a bit harder to pull off. There are seven in total (One Jump Ahead, Gramma Tala, and Mickey Mouse, Detective in varying numbers) so you run the risk of falling flat and getting run over. Also, if you hit your ramp, but fail to draw your heavy hitters like Maui, Demigod and Simba, Rightful Heir, once again, you’re floundering around doing a lot of nothing.
At the end of the day, the Steel / Sapphire deck is one that has high variance, low consistency, but an all-in play style that is pretty darn fun.
2. Best Disney Lorcana starter decks – Ruby / Emerald (Aladdin and Cruella)
The next deck is the Ruby and Emerald deck with Aladdin and Cruella. This is a deck for those who are true tacticians. This deck is a deck that wants to stick characters on the board early, and leverage various buffs to trade up in challenges. It also has means of removing characters from the field and draining Lore from your opponent. It also sports Evasive characters, which means that those characters cannot be challenged, which allows them to quest unimpeded.
The downside to this deck is that it does require a lot of attention and understanding of the board state. There’s are definitely more meaningful decision points when piloting this deck, and not making the right decision can spell certain demise. But if you’re able to pilot the deck, it’s a wonderful and fulfilling experience.
1. Best Disney Lorcana starter decks – Amber / Amethyst (Moana and Mickey Mouse)
The last starter deck and the best one that we’re going to recommend to anyone is the Amber and Amethyst deck, with Moana, of Motonui, and Mickey Mouse, Wayward Sorcerer. This deck is a hardcore aggro deck, playing a lot of little characters. This floods the board and overwhelms opponents, forcing them to spend precious resources dealing with your characters. Any that are left over can quickly get quests done to gain lore pretty quickly. It also has ways to refill its hand quickly to keep the pressure up.
That being said, the deck does fold to a slow start paired up against a deck that has a lot of removal tools. It’s also very light on utility cards and is all in on the swarm tactics. This deck is one that puts you ahead quickly and can often keep you ahead and win the game. It’s awesome for new players, as its game plan is fairly linear, with some minor nuances to keep things interesting, all while focusing on learning the fundamental concepts of the game.
And that’s all there is to it! Disney Lorcana has built up a ton of hype around the game and now that it’s out, there’s tons of players exploring the game and what’s possible, even though there’s only one set out. But now you have the knowledge to pick up the starter deck that’s right for you, and you can go on to change it how you want.
