In Anno 117 Pax Romana, Specialists are unique experts that grant buffs and bonuses to the military, trade, religion, seafaring, economy, finance, research, and more in your city by slotting them into buildings and ships. Regardless of their speciality, they are designed to give you a boost, whether that’s improved income, a deeper workforce pool to pull from, lower maintenance costs for buildings, reduced trade costs, faster ship movement speed, a boost to your city’s Prestige, or a much-needed buff to your denizens’ happiness.
They come in varying rarities as well and can be slotted in various places to maximize their advantages. Paired with optimal production ratios, they are key to making your colonies thrive. In this guide, we’ll walk you through all the details, including how to get them, how to use them, and a list of Anno 117 Pax Romana Specialists.
- Specialists provide buffs and bonuses to various parts of your city, from economy to finance, by way of military and seafaring.
- Specialists are obtained through quests, events, Trading Posts, Contracts, Research, and the Hall of Fame.
- To activate a Specialist’s bonus, slot them into a Governor’s Villa, Officium, or Captain Slot on a ship.
How to get Specialists in Anno 117 Pax Romana
In Anno 117 Pax Romana, you can get Specialists in several ways:
- Complete events and quests: As you make your way through the campaign, you’ll come across quests and events that offer up Specialists as a reward. The first of these is Gemini In The Rough, where you have to choose between two aids, Brutus or Gaius, each with their unique set of perks.
- Buy them from Trading Posts: As you uncover more of the map, you’ll gain access to Trading Posts that offer Specialists in exchange for Denarii. Tap the Trading Post, then head to the Items portion of the menu to see a list of available Specialists. The list at each Trading Post resets every 10 minutes, giving you a new selection to choose from.
- Complete Contracts: Visit lighthouses across the map to Contracts that task you with delivering or collecting cargo. Specific Contracts offer a Specialist as a reward on completion.
- Unlock specific Research nodes: You can obtain Specialists by researching specific nodes in the Research tree, for example, Sword and Salt, which yields a Legendary Specialist in military, seafaring, or civics. These tend to be the final node of each branch of the skill tree, so they are very much a late-game method to obtain new Specialists.
- Unlock them in the Hall of Fame: You can use Fame points to unlock new Specialists in the Hall of Fame menu. For example, there’s Actorius Maximiminus (22 Fame points at Tier II Latium), a finance specialist, and Menander of Nicomedes (20 Fame points at Tier I Albion), a religion Specialist. Fame points are accrued by completing challenges as listed in the Hall of Fame menu.

It’s worth noting that you can re-roll the selection of Specialists for sale at Trading Posts. Click on a Trading Post, select Items, and then tap Re-roll. For every new re-roll, the cost increases by 2,500 Denarii for that specific Trading Post, making it quite pricey in the longer term. It’s best to save re-rolling for the late game when you have stacks of money spare.
How to use Specialists in Anno 117 Pax Romana
Once you have a Specialist, you’ll need to put them to work to benefit from their buffs and bonuses. There are several options here:
- Governor’s Villa: When slotted here, a Specialist’s buff will activate for buildings within the Villa’s range. The Villa comes with five Specialists slots as standard, increasing as you gain Prestige.
- Officium: You can slot up to two Specialists per Officium, which, much like the Villa, will confer their buffs on buildings within the Officium’s area of effect.
- Captain Slot on ships: You can slot seafaring Specialists, technically called Captains, into the Captain Slot on ships. Their bonuses, whether that’s hit points or movement speed, will affect that particular ship.
Specialists come in one of five rarities: Common, Rare, Epic, Unique, and Legendary. Aside from rising in cost, the higher the tier, the better the buffs and perks they confer when slotted into one of the three options detailed above.
