Tom Orry, Editor – Asemblancel, PS4 and PC

I played a not inconsiderable amount of Asemblance this week. This odd little science fiction thriller drip feeds tiny morsels of story as you navigate a number of memories in a sort of holodec. This holodec is housed in a dimly lit and partially shutdown lab, and an AI is constantly talking to you. You’ll likely finish the majority of what’s on offer here in a couple of hours, but there’s a ‘final’ ending that will take a lot longer to find. For one, unless I’m reading too much into what I’ve found in-game, the solution is likely somewhere outside of the game. If you’re into complex puzzles and detective work, this should be right up your street. If you’re not, Asemblance might be another target for the “that’s not a video game” brigade.

Steve Burns, Deputy Editor – Dead By Daylight, PC

Remember when you were a kid and you’d watch horror movies, chuckling away at the idiot teenagers as they’d run upstairs from Big Killer Man, rather than out the front door? Well, turns out they probably had other things on their minds, as Dead By Daylight proves. An asymmetric, 4v1 multiplayer only game, a group of human idiots have to escape from the clutches of, well, Big Killer Man. It’s filled with clever little touches – the senses of each class are different, for example – and is so, so tense, especially when you’re the last person standing and are desperately trying to get a generator working. It has its problems: a bit of jank here and there; the survivors’ abilities are sometimes too strong for the hunter, but for the price it’s worth a shot.

Dave Scammell, News Editor – Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, PS4

Okay, so this is a bit of a lie: I haven’t actually been playing Mirror’s Edge Catalyst this week – I finished it a couple of weekends back – but I wanted to let you know how I got on after that wonky start. And you know what? Is isn’t actually half bad.

Once it had sunk its hook in I ended up finishing the whole thing in a couple of sessions over the course of a weekend. I haven’t been back to it since (I’m not convinced there’s really much there in the way of replayability), but the open world actually works far better than I initially gave it credit for. More importantly, the free-running thrill feels largely unchanged from the original. Yes, you have to unlock abilities using XP now, but it’s well paced and doesn’t really feel much different to other games that gradually introduce new moves.

The story is appalling, of course, with a major late game revelation handled so badly that it barely even seems to register with Faith. But still, come here for the running and the climbing and you’ll probably end up having a good time.

Alice Bell, Junior Staff Writer – LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakensdemo;Resident Evil 7: Biohazard demo, PS4

Sadly I have been too busy expressing my opinion on social media over the past week to have had time to play any games properly (that’s not true, it’s actually because all the newer games I contemplated buying were too expensive, and Tom probably won’t let me do ‘still a bit of Overwatch now and then, and some sudoku on my phone when the ads are on telly). But I did play the demo for LEGO The Force Awakens, which was okay – it’s a little set piece on Jakku, with Finn, Rey, and BB-8. I suspect it’ll be like all the other LEGO games, i.e. good but somehow a bit soulless. Although this one has 100% BB-8 in it, so you never know. Also this one apparently has cover shooting in it, which is weird. It’s out soon, anyway.

I also played the Resident Evil 7 demo, also known as ‘best post E3 marketing strategy 2016’ based on how much people are talking about it. Anyway, I found it to be scary and weird, and I’m glad I didn’t have to play it in VR. Also I think the fact that it’s called Resident Evil 7: Biohazard here, and Biohazard 7: Resident Evil in Japan is the funniest thing.
