Rebellion’s Sniper Elite series is set to return in January with the release of Sniper Elite: Resistance. Another entry in the series set in World War 2, players will take out Nazis from afar and even assassinate Hitler once again. While some players have expressed an interest in exploring different wars in future entries, Rebellion wants to keep the series tied to the Second World War.

Why Sniper Elite won’t leave World War 2

In an interview with VideoGamer for an upcoming episode of our podcast, Sniper Elite: Resistance lead level designer Beck Shaw explained that the World War 2 setting is not only integral to the series’ identity, but also a perfect match for game design.

“Sniper Elite, at least for the foreseeable future, will still be grounded in World War 2,” Shaw explained. “I think it gives us a really good challenge. Like, World War 2 was probably the last time where, you know, it was one man and his gun against the Nazis. Obviously, uh there probably were people that stuck behind enemy lines, but you don’t have all these drones flying around, you don’t have thermal imaging sensors and all that satellite data modern soldiers might have.”

“I think we are happy being in World War 2 right now, and there’s a lot of places we haven’t been to yet.”

BECK SHAW, SNIPER ELITE: RESISTANCE LEAD LEVEL DESIGNER

Of course, Rebellion’s video game series does have some fantastical elements that make it more modern than a real-world soldier’s experience in the Second World War. Alongside a very handy minimap, there’s the ability to see through walls on easier difficulties, but the technological restrictions of the 1940s means developers also have to work around those restrictions.

“It does make it more challenging when we’re creating levels and creating designs for weapons and just gameplay features,” Shaw explained. “We do try and ground it in World War 2, but obviously we do have to give players some powers so that they they could feel like they can you know kill [large] amounts of Nazis because it was quite difficult without any any of this stuff. But we enjoy it in WW2; I think a lot of the fans really really enjoy it as well.”

Shaw explained that there are still “a lot of stories from World War 2” that Rebellion has yet to explore. While obviously unconfirmed, future games in the series could take players to lesser-known battles in the Pacific Theatre, such as fights in the Philippine Campaign. While many pieces of WW2 media

“I won’t say, like, we won’t explore these in the future, but yeah I think we are happy being in World War 2 right now, and there’s a lot of places we haven’t been to yet.”

Sniper Elite: Resistance is scheduled to release on January 28, 2025 for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
