Twenty years on from the last mainline entry, Onimusha was long overdue for some love and a revival from Capcom. Onimusha Way of the Sword promises just that. It aims to safeguard the horror-heavy, sword-fighting action for which the series is known, all while injecting it with some showy modern gloss.

After a string of trailers, we now have a rough idea of the title’s release window, along with an idea of what to expect. Here’s everything you need to know about Capcom’s upcoming samurai action thriller, Onimusha Way of the Sword.

As it stands, Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha Way of the Sword will release in 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. It’s a loose release window, and there’s been no indication that Capcom is targeting a particular part of the year quite yet, so it could be a new year drop, a mid-summer treat, or land even later in the year.

Given that the franchise has been dormant for the better part of 20 years (aside from a VR spin-off, a browser game, and last year’s Samurai’s Destiny remaster), there’s no reliable release schedule data for the series to lean on to estimate a speculative release month.

The publisher, however, favors the first part of the year for its big-ticket releases. Most recently, Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2 were released in February and March, respectively. 2026 is fast approaching, though, so we expect Capcom to confirm a firm Onimusha Way of the Sword release date before too long.

Onimusha Way of the Sword gameplay and trailer analysis

We’ve been positively spoiled when it comes to Onimusha Way of the Sword trailers; Capcom has cooked up no less than five. The announcement trailer, beamed out during Geoff Keighley’s annual ad-fest at The Game Awards, is brooding and dark, but very much an exercise in exposition, showing a brief glimpse of protagonist Miyamoto Musashi and snippets of a demon-infested Kyoto.

The first trailer introduces us to Miyamoto Musashi and affords us our first glimpse at combat. Battle seems to swing more towards action-adventure slashing and parrying and less towards souls-like grittiness, as many series are wont to do these days.

The second Onimusha Way of the Sword trailer sees Musashi cutting deftly through Genma demons, including evasive acrobatics and an undeniable visceral flair. What stands out is the pace of combat, which feels slower and more intentional than we’ve grown accustomed to from action games. The trailer culminates in what appears to be a boss fight with a hulking ogre, then another against a swift-moving, snarky character called Sasaki Ganryu, who may very well be Way of the Sword’s main antagonist.

Released during Gamescom 2025, the third trailer focuses on the gruesome Genma demons that Musashi will encounter. Tentacles, contorting dolls, infected grunts, and disguisting butes; the trailer offers a quick horror-infused look at what you’ll be contending with come 2026.

The fourth trailer is much more story-heavy than the previous ones. Seemingly dead, Musashi gets hold of the Oni, granting him new powers when he rejoins the world of the living. The trailer also stands out for showcasing a meatier slice of the characters set to pepper Onimusha Way of the Sword’s story.

Expected Onimusha Way of the Sword price

With no pre-orders in sight and Capcom yet to reveal a specific price point, we can only speculate for now. As Onimusha Way of the Sword is a mainline installment in the series, we expect Capcom to slap on a full AAA $70 (£60) price, matching the likes of Monster Hunter Wilds, for example.

However, Onimusha doesn’t quite carry the same clout as Capcom’s more popular franchises, so we could see the publisher drop the price slightly to lure in newcomers and younger players who weren’t around during the series’ heyday in the early 2000s.

Onimusha Way of the Sword setting and story

Set in Edo-era Kyoto, Onimusha Way of the Sword recounts the tale of a samurai called Miyamoto Musashi. The historical capital is beset by clouds of Malice that spawn supernatural monstrosities and fiends from hell known as Genma. To aid his task, Musashi uses the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that endows its wielder with the ability to combat Genma.

Miyamoto Musashi will be familiar to Onimusha fans for his appearance in 2003’s spin-off, Onimusha Blade Warriors. He’s also a real-world historical figure known for coming out on top in no less than 62 duels, as well as being the father of the Niten Ichi-ryū style of swordmanship and for penning several philosophical works.

In Onimusha Way of the Sword, he’s grappling with a “reason to fight” and seemingly also affected by the Malice, suggesting an internal struggle that may form a cornerstone of the story.
