World of Warcraft (WoW), a juggernaut of an MMORPG that’s still going strong after two decades, is getting ready to release its 11th expansion: World of Warcraft Midnight. Unlike previous WoW expansions, which largely stood on their own in terms of story content, Midnight is the second part of the Worldsoul Saga, making it the first expansion with a story that directly follows its predecessor as part of the same narrative arc.
In addition to continuing the Worldsoul Saga, WoW Midnight brings a mix of expected features, such as an increased level cap, new talents, and new zones, alongside one particular feature that players have been requesting for years: player housing. Additionally, you can look forward to updates, including a new user interface and reworked zones.
Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from Midnight based on what’s been revealed by Blizzard so far.
What is World of Warcraft Midnight?
World of Warcraft Midnight is the 11th WoW expansion and the second part of the Worldsoul Saga that was started with The War Within. The announcement was made on August 19, 2025, at Gamescom, where Blizzard showcased some of the major features being added with Midnight, including the bat-like Haranir playable race and the Prey system (more on that below).
While there’s not an official release date for Midnight yet, it’s scheduled to release on or before June 30, 2026, but you can play three days early if you pre-purchase the Epic Edition of the game.
What’s the latest WoW expansion?
The latest WoW expansion du jour is The War Within, which is the first part of the Worldsoul Saga. Xal’atath, the herald of a terrifying cosmic horror, has become a threat to the entirety of Azeroth. Your quest to stop her takes you to the subcontinent of Khaz Algar, which is tucked inside Azeroth. You journey with familiar characters like Khadgar, Anduin, and Alleria as you try to form new alliances, needing all the help you can get to thwart Xal’atath’s plan.
In addition to The War Within’s campaign being some of the best storytelling we’ve seen from the MMO so far, World of Warcraft’s gameplay has also enjoyed a range of refinements.
Blizzard knows what works and what it’s willing to experiment with, which you see with new features like delves, short, replayable instances designed to offer accessible, rewarding content for groups and individuals. We also have the familiar offerings of world quests, raids, PVP seasons, and the Adventure Guide. All of these serve to keep the title fresh, even at the endgame.
What changes will WoW Midnight bring?
As shown in the WoW Midnight trailer, the game will pick up its story and continue the narrative started in the previous World of Warcraft expansion. Xal’atath is targeting the power of the Sunwell with the intention of leaving Azeroth trapped in darkness. The Sunwell is a massive source of magical power, so the stakes are high as ever. Naturally, members of both the Horde and Alliance must rally together to defend the world of Azeroth from this existential threat. It’s the sort of broad brush, high-stakes fantasy that Blizzard does best.
Additionally, there are several gameplay changes coming with this expansion, including an update to the user interface. First, the level cap will go up to 90. We’ll also see the addition of the World of Warcraft Midnight Prey system, which will allow you to hunt down individual enemies across the open world in pursuit of powerful rewards.
You have new and reworked zones to explore, a new Demon Hunter specialization, and the bat-like Haranir as a playable race. We will also see Silvermoon City, home of the Blood Elves, acting as a player hub for this expansion. This provides a lovely dose of nostalgia for those who first encountered the elven metropolis back in 2007’s Burning Crusade expansion. We’ll also see new transmogs, dungeons, raids, and delves to look forward to, as expected.
History of WoW expansions
World of Warcraft expansions add new zones to the world, occasionally rework existing zones, make changes to the level cap, include a new story, possibly add playable races, add new classes or rework existing classes, and bring new endgame content.
Until Midnight, expansions didn’t continue the overall narrative of their predecessor and instead tended to stand on their own. That said, WoW does have a history of big narrative developments that loom over multiple expansions, like Thrall stepping down as the Warchief of the Horde and ushering in a political crisis for the faction.
Here’s every expansion in release order:
- The Burning Crusade
- Wrath of the Lich King
- Cataclysm
- Mists of Pandaria
- Warlords of Draenor
- Legion
- Battle for Azeroth
- Shadowlands
- Dragonflight
- The War Within
- Midnight
