Codemasters has announced that they will launch ‘Funsta.com’ in September 2005. ‘Funsta.com’ will target casual and core online gamers, with games available through web browsers, subscription, download-purchase, or via Funsta Arcade, the dedicated gaming client for ‘Funsta.com’. Over 1000 games will be available from the site.
“As online distribution becomes a more regular route for broadband Internet users to access entertainment products, Codemasters is perfectly placed to launch Funsta.com as an all-in-one gaming portal,” said Nick Pili, Codemasters’ Head of Internet Gaming. “By bringing together the best content providers to one site and promoting it to our extensive audience and beyond, we will make it a key online destination for both causal and core gamers.”
Casual gamers will benefit from Codemasters’ partnership with RealNetworks, Inc, who will provide content through its RealArcade game management software. The games will include everything from puzzles to arcade/action games. While many games will need to be purchased, there will also be over 300 free-play games.
Of more interest to core gamers is the news that the ‘Funsta.com’ service will provide the latest PC games to trial, download-purchase or play on a subscription-based plan. Macrovision’s Trymedia business unit will provide their game distribution technology to ‘Funsta.com’ so gamers can download and try before they purchase over 500 of the biggest PC games. A partnership with Metaboli will see a subscription based service become available where users will have access to a number of Codemasters’ PC titles.
