Barbie hit the headlines yesterday for finally introducing some diversity to its doll range with tall, curvy and petite body types joining the original shape in the Fashionistas doll line. There’ll also be seven skin tones, 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles, which all go a long way to changing they way young girls feel about their body type.
In addition, Barbie announced a new Game Developer Career of the Year Barbie, following last year’s Film Director Barbie. Both professions are male dominated, so it’s great to see Barbie potentially inspiring a new generation into careers which need more diversity.
The new doll launches this summer and features a red-headed barbie complete with glasses, laptop and a headset.
“For more than 55 years, Barbie has been a global, cultural icon and a source of inspiration and imagination to millions of girls around the world,” said Richard Dickson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mattel. “Barbie reflects the world girls see around them. Her ability to evolve and grow with the times, while staying true to her spirit, is central to why Barbie is the number one fashion doll in the world.”
