The Android platform has rocketed past the 100 million units milestone, with Google revealing during its annual I/O developers conference in San Francisco that the firm is registering 400,000 new devices each day.
Google Android product boss Hugo Barra also highlighted the widespread support for the platform, with 36 OEM manufacturers of 310 different models of Android device offered on 215 mobile carriers worldwide.
The conference also brought news of the 3.1 update to the Android Honeycomb OS, which amongst other things will implement USB host support. A demo showed an Xbox 360 controller plugged into the device to play a game on a Honeycomb-powered tablet device.
Beyond Honeycomb, Google also talked of codename Ice Cream Sandwich, the next major version of Android with the goal of “one OS that work everywhere, regardless of device”. Ice Cream Sandwich will bring Honeycomb to smartphones, adding “more multitasking” and “richer widgets”.
