Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the UMD disc format, used is the PSP console, has been approved as a standard format by Ecma International, an industry association specializing in the standardisation of information and communication systems.
Analysts are predicting that the disc format approval will help encourage more content on the format from publishers of movies and music. The PSP had shipped 2.97 million units by march compared to the Nintendo DS which has shipped 5.27 million units. Sony will be hoping improved publisher support will help them close the gap on the Nintendo DS.
