Sony has denied it is planning to cease production of the 160GB PS3, despite the fact that several retailers have been slashing the price of the model.
GAME recently offered the model for as little as £159.99 but has since run out of stock, while Amazon UK and Play.com are both selling the unit at £199.99. The RRP for the model is £249.99.
You might assume that retailers are simply making these deals to clear out their older models, ahead of a phase-out from Sony. But according to MCV, a spokesperson for SCE UK has stated new stock will soon be on the way.
“Retail is currently being very aggressive with the price of the 160GB model to the obvious advantage of consumers,” said the spokesperson.
“This means demand is currently high and in some areas, stock is lower than we’d like. That said, we will be addressing this with additional shipments in the very near future.”
Last week it was claimed that the PS3 price will drop to £179.99 later this year, with Sony announcing a price cut at gamescom in August.
