The BBC website today reported news that Microsoft will be replacing around 14 million Xbox power cables free of charge after they were discovered to be a potential fire hazard, and after a small number of injuries were caused through faulty hardware.
Microsoft is keen to stress that the number of consoles affected was small, “This is a preventative step we’re choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents,” said Robbie Bach, senior vice president, Microsoft home and entertainment division. “We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement cord is the responsible thing to do.”
Those who will require new cables pretty much covers most owners; Xbox’s made before 23 October 2003 for all regions but Europe need a new cable while consoles in Europe made before 13 January 2004 require a replacement.
Consumers can order a new cable from the Xbox website or by telephoning 0800 028 9276 in the UK, with delivery expected to be within 2 to 4 weeks of placing the order.
Pro-G is happy to report that no-one – to our knowledge – has come home to find a pile of ashes where their house once was.
