Portal 2 has sold three million copies worldwide since its launch in April 2011, Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell revealed to an audience at the Games for Learning Institute’s Games for Change conference.
Newell divulged the impressive figure to back up claims that a game can be both commercially successful and educational – pointing to the fact Portal 2 is used by educators to teach students about physics.
It’s not clear if the figure refers to retail only sales, but Valve tends not to give out information relating to sales via Steam.
The original game has now sold over four million copies worldwide at retail, plus what is sure to be a significant number of copies via Steam. The game launched in 2007.

Given the overwhelmingly positive response to Portal 2 it’s no surprise to see it selling by the bucketload. Our Jamin Smith said in his Portal 2 review: “A mere ten minutes here will yield more memorable moments than you’re likely to squeeze out of the entirety of most other games this year. In all aspects of its design, Portal 2 is genius.”
