Official sales figures for first week sales of the Nintendo DS have been released, revealing that more than 500,000 units have been sold. As expected, this has caused many retailers to run out of stock, with an estimated 90% of the initial shipment being sold.
These figures have prompted Nintendo to increase its shipment target to five million units worldwide by the end of March 2005, a period including both the Japanese and European launches.
This shortage has led to some rather ridiculous prices being paid for units, especially from importers who can’t scour local stores for remaining stock. Rather surprisingly the GBA SP also sold an impressive 800,000 units, making the week’s combined handheld sales the biggest in history.
