Nintendo has announced that over 500,000 Nintendo DS hardware units have been sold in Europe since the machine went on sale on March 11th 2005. This amounts to 77% of stock shipped to stores across Europe and some stores have reported that they are fully sold out. New stock is expected to arrive shortly.

Of all the games released for the Nintendo DS in Europe, Super Mario 64 DS has been the best performer, with over 250,000 units sold to date. WarioWare Touched! has also sold well. Over the next few months games like Yoshi Touch & Go (May 6th), Need for Speed Underground 2 (May 27th) and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (May) are expected to help sales continue throughout the summer.

Jim Merrick, Senior Director European Marketing, commented:

The launch of Nintendo DS in Europe has been a huge success. European gamers have embraced the Nintendo DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have console! Nintendo set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, we have certainly accomplished this. With many more great games launching soon, sales of Nintendo DS will just keep growing.

At Pro-G we are pleased that the Nintendo DS is performing well, but we are concerned about the software currently lined up for release over the summer. Hopefully E3 in May will reveal a number of previously unknown titles that are in development.
