There has been speculation post-Wii U reveal about the cost, and indeed if we’ll actually be able to purchase a separate Wii U controller altogether. However, for all the interconnectivity between devices that that the new system seems to offer, multiple Wii U controller use appears to be somewhat of a non-starter.
In a recent interview with news.com’s technology department, Switched On, Miyamoto suggested that as of yet, multiple controller use is still in the research phase.
“Our basic premise is that you can use one with a system. If we got to an idea of having multiple (controllers) it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that,” explained Miyamoto. “That being said, we are doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friend’s house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible.”
The Wii U is still a good year or more away from launching so it’s entirely possible Nintendo will figure out a way to utilise multiple Wii U controllers in that time.
