Martin Gaston, our beloved previews editor / man-squid hybrid, was crowned the Rising Star at last night’s Games Media Awards.

While VideoGamer.com has received nominations for the last three years in a row, this is the first time the site has won an award. Well, I say the site; it’s Martin who won – but we’ll happily ride his coattails while we’re celebrating.

Martin himself couldn’t be reached for comment this morning, as he’s already back in the field at an event for a soon-to-be-released game.

Other winners last night included Christian Donlan, who received a standing ovation from a large chunk of the audience as he collected the award for Specialist Print Writer. Keza McDonald received a similarly warm reception as she collected Specialist Writer Online.

Eurogamer won Best Website for a hugely impressive fifth year in a row, an achievement matched by the Guardian team for their national newspaper coverage. NowGamer’s Dave Cook also cemented his status as a repeat winner, picking up his third Best Regional Games Columnist award for his work at The Scotsman.

Rock Paper Shotgun won Best Blog, Shortlist got Best Coverage in a Mainstream Magazine, and the SentUAMessage won the Broadcast/Podcast award. That said, GameWank’s colourful name won them a special mention from host Greg Davies – Mr Gilbert from The Inbetweeners.

VG247’s Pat Garratt introduced the Games Media Legend award, which went to industry veteran Colin Campbell. Garratt receiving a bit of drunken heckling after he made a few less-than-subtle digs at Future Publishing.

Bizarrely, the biggest troublemakers of the night were the lead sponsors, independent retailer Grainger Games, who persistently disrupted their own ceremony with annoying, pissed-up braying. Their contributions to the décor of the venue – midgets, girls in bikinis and condoms scattered all over the tables – didn’t exactly reek of class, either.

But despite this, it was a pretty wonderful night. And naturally I speak for everyone here when I say that we are utterly delighted for Martin. Thoroughly deserved.
