According to sources close to the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s next phone will be thinner, lighter and boast an eight-megapixel camera, as opposed to the five-megapixel camera of the iPhone 4.

Apple has already ordered key components for the new device, and is aiming to launch in September, says the source. While Apple usually launches its new phone in the summer, the iPhone 5 simply wasn’t ready in time.

The new phone is reported to operate on Qualcomm Inc.’s wireless chips, as oppose to the Infineon Technologies’ chips currently used in the iPhone 4.

This comes after claims that the iPhone 5 is not a huge update on the iPhone 4. Wall Street Journal’s sources suggest this might well be the case.

Even so, Apple expects the new phone to sell well on its release.

“Apple’s sales estimates of the new iPhone are quite aggressive,” a supplier at Apple told WSJ. “It told us to prepare to help the company meet its goal of 25 million units by the end of the year. The initial production volume will be a few million units.”

With multiple sources now pointing to a September launch, it’s seeming more and more likely that this will be the case. Presumably an announcement isn’t too far off now.
