After reports that the Gizmondo’s US launch was heading for disaster, with little marketing for the handheld, it has now been confirmed that the August 11th release has been put back to some time in October. Gizmondo Europe has spoken to Eurogamer.

We’re moving the release date, which is why there hasn’t been anything promotion-wise yet,” said the Gizmondo representative. “The new release date is now October for the North American Gizmondo launch. More details will be released next week. There will be a launch event, but at present it’s not been decided where or when.

The reason for the delay has been put down to two deciding factors. Firstly the month of August is very slow for retail and secondly two key titles, a Sat Nav package and a “major” game, have been delayed. Because of these factors the rep said “it made little sense to launch the machine.” Lack of Gizmondo units was also given as a reason for the delay, with the hope that by October more units will be available to ship.

With stiff competition we’ll have to wait and see if the Gizmondo gains any success in North America.
