In a world that is always seeking new ways to advertise, what better way is there than to involve you into the ad campaign? Well, that is allegedly what Microsoft is doing with a viral ad campaign going under the name of Ourcolony.
After the huge success of the Halo 2 viral ads (anybody remember ilovebees.com?), speculation is rife – thanks to some intelligent reporting by Gamespot – that they are at it again, with the prize possibly being a first-look at Xbox 2 hardware.
To paraphrase the excellent Gamespot article, it seems that ourcolony.net is the home of the campaign, and the idea is for people to form groups which will then participate in challenges. Prizes (in some form or fashion are mentioned, with the bonus for Microsoft being that it gets people involved in the brand.
Whilst many herald the Sony hype-machine and marketing team as the cream of the industry (a title which maybe only EA could have issue with), Microsoft is beginning to catch up, with some interesting ideas – the Halo 2 campaign was a huge success.
We’ll report more as we hear it.
