Nintendo has announced that its latest handheld gaming device, the Nintendo DS, will be released in Australia on February 24th 2005. The first units to ship at launch will come bundled with a demo of Metroid Prime Hunters, and all units will come preloaded with Pictochat.

The console is set to retail for $199.99 AUD (approximately £80), and Nintendo are looking to continue the success that the machine has had in North America and Japan, selling over 2.8 million units so far.

No official launch line up has been announced, but Mario 64 DS and WarioWare: Touched will be available simultaneously with the console. With the Australian release announced a European date can’t be far away; we just hope we get it at something like an equivalent price.

We’ll bring you more news as it happens.
