Japanese website Nikkei had reported that Sony would be producing 18 million PSP units in the current business year. When this figure was revealed to be 12 million units in Sony’s financial report, it seemed obvious that they had cut the number of units they were manufacturing this year. This, however, is apparently not the case.

Speaking to industry website GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe representative cleared up the matter. According to the rep, no figure other than 12 million was ever announced, implying that the figure which Nikkei reported was nothing more than rumour.

Well, that clears that up then. Sony are on track and haven’t decided to cut back on production of the PSP. Let’s hope they have manufactured enough to give us Europeans enough units this September.
