Days after sports fans were shocked at EA practically obliterating competing NFL games, EA’s planned acquisition of Digital Illusions CE has hit a snag. Shareholders have rejected the deal.
Two groups of shareholders have opposed the deal, with these groups representing 28% of the firms stock. Acording to Swedish financial news site di.se, 90% of shares must vote in favour of the deal, in order for it to be passed.
Digital Illusions are the developers behind the monster Battlefield franchise, which has been published by EA, proving to be a huge success for both companies. Battlefield 2 and the first titles in the series for consoles are due in 2005, obviously making the company a key target for the publishing giant.
With the refusal to accept the offer, both companies now have until December 27th 2004 to convince the refusing parties to vote in favour of the deal. If the acquisition does go ahead, it would be another huge buy for EA, having only recently acquiring Burnout developers Criterion.
