Codemasters has revealed the latest entry in the DiRT franchise, DiRT Showdown, will be released in May next year.

While ‘Dirt Showdown’ might sound like some kind of Channel 4 reality TV cleaning show, the game’s actual inspiration is far more exciting: it’s clear that Demolition Derby has been a major point of reference, with the main aim being to smash your rival racers into oily, crunched-up wrecks.

This isn’t DiRT 4, incidentally. The fourth ‘proper’ entry in the series will also be out at some point, leaving Showdown to do its own thing.

There’s a reveal trailer up over at Gamespot, who reports that the game has an eight-way multiplayer arena mode, and a load of Autolog-like social features. No surprise there.

Just the other day I was thinking that it would be cool if someone made a new Destruction Derby Game – and now we’re getting one.

I’ve also been thinking about zombie plagues a fair bit lately, so it might be an idea to start stockpiling food, shotguns and baseball bats. Merry Christmas!
