BioWare didn’t know the difficult task it was getting into prior to the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, according to the MMO’s writer Alex Freed.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com Freed explained the development of the game was a difficult task and it’s unlikely we’ll see an MMO like it any time soon.

“Obviously people have made nods in the direction and taken other routes to immersion in storytelling but in terms of ‘we are playing through a clear character driven story’, no one has done anything like this before and I think it’s going to be a while before anyone tries this.

“This was a massive, massive undertaking. Even we didn’t know what we were getting into at the start. I think it will be difficult for people to attempt it the same way. I kind of hope they do it will be interesting to see.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic is rumoured to be the most expensive MMO ever made. Earlier in the year EA boss John Riccitiello stated “anything north of 1M [subs]” was required for it to start to look like a great investment.

The MMO is doing pretty well, after a beta period that brought in over 2 million users.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launched December 20.
