On Monday Apple Computer plans to announce it’s ditching IBM in favour of Intel. This would see an end to Apple’s partnership with IBM which began in 1994. Sources suggest that Apple plans to move lower end systems such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips as soon as 2006, with higher end machines like the Power Mac making the switch in 2007.
IBM, Apple and Intel have declined to comment on the story but an official announcement is expected at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday. IBM has become a big player in the console market. They produce the Gekko CPU for the Nintendo GameCube and are manufacturing the triple core CPU for the Xbox 360.
