After over a decade of silence, renowned RPG developer Falcom’s cult classic Persona-esque dungeon-crawler RPG series is back with a brand new entry, setting, and cast in Kyoto Xanadu.

Originally teased in March 2024 for the 10th anniversary of its predecessor Tokyo Xanadu, the game was officially revealed in the February 2026 Nintendo Partner Showcase.

Much like Persona, this upcoming gorgeous anime-style RPG is switching out the Tokyo setting seen in its predecessor and in many other JRPGs, such as high-school sim Persona 5 and underrated monster-tamer Digimon Story Time Stranger. Here, Kyoto is the capital of Japan, promising us a setting that will provide a unique flavour compared to many anime-inspired titles.

Kyoto is under threat from another world where monsters roam free, emerging from the great labyrinth: Xanadu.

Upon transferring to Hirasaka Academy, a school for gifted students, the main protagonist, Rei, will conquer this labyrinth with his classmates in a mix of dungeon crawling and real-time 3D combat.

Reaching out to the truth

This school setting, dungeon crawling, and time spent outside battle with classmates don’t just keep it close to its predecessor. Just like Tokyo Xanadu, there are many red threads between Falcom’s new title and the Persona games, which have similar dungeon-crawling and time-management mechanics.

But given the unique setting, combat, and colorful monster designs, we can expect it to be a thrilling experience filled with its own delightful anime tropes and emotional storytelling that will set it apart.

Whether Kyoto Xanadu will be able to stand further apart from Persona than its predecessor is yet to be seen. Regardless, we can’t wait to learn more about its world and make some social links with its cast when it launches this summer.

At any rate, it’ll help keep us fed until we hear any news regarding the elusive and as yet unconfirmed Persona 6.
