The offices of GTA 6 developer Rockstar North were reportedly hit by a fire after an alleged “boiler explosion” in the early morning hours of January 19. Rockstar North is one of several Rockstar Games branches working on GTA 6, with the studio located in Edinburgh, Scotland.

According to Scottish outlet The Herald, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was dispatched to Rockstar North following an alarm. Courtesy of quotes attributed to an SFRS spokesperson, the Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 5:02AM, and “Operations Control mobilized three fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters worked to secure structural damage at a commercial building”.

The statement adds that “There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at 9:21 AM”. The Herald states that although the precise nature of the incident is currently unclear, there are reports suggesting that it was an “explosion in the boiler room”. Gaming publication IGN also adds that “it’s believed the office remains shut today”.

Rockstar North is one of Rockstar Games’ branches, with several other studios located in cities such as Toronto and San Diego. Although Rockstar North has been the primary Grand Theft Auto developer with credits including Vice City, San Andreas, GTA 4, and GTA 5, the sixth Grand Theft Auto is a large-scale project requiring the cooperation of all Rockstar branches.

The largest contributor is reportedly Rockstar India, with over 1,500 developers, while there are believed to be roughly 6,000 developers working on GTA 6 across the entirety of Rockstar.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, following its latest delay. Separately, Rockstar has also been embroiled in controversy over the firing of 34 developers, who have recently been denied interim relief.
