We previously reported that Clair Obscur Expedition 33 had racked up the second-most Game of the Year wins, trailing only Elden Ring. At the time, Expedition 33 had earned a total of 334 GOTY wins, surpassing The Last of Us Part 2’s 326, but still falling behind Elden Ring’s 435. However, Expedition 33 has since climbed into the 400s, putting it within striking distance of potentially beating Elden Ring’s record.
For games released in 2025, ResetEra member Angie reports that Clair Obscur Expedition 33 now sits at 411 Game of the Year wins. This tally aggregates GOTY awards from media events, award shows, and outlets that have been active for more than one year. The closest competition among 2025 releases is Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, which has earned 31 wins.
Below are the current top 10 games with the highest number of Game of the Year wins:
- Elden Ring – 435
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 411

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is within striking distance of Elden Ring
It remains to be seen whether Expedition 33 will overtake Elden Ring, but Sandfall Interactive’s debut RPG is firmly within striking distance. The game is nominated for Game of the Year at the 2026 DICE Awards and is also part of the BAFTA Game Awards 2026 GOTY longlist.
Major honors for Expedition 33 include Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards, as well as Game of the Year at Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards. Clair Obscur also won Game of the Year at the Indie Game Awards, though it was stripped of the prize due to minor AI usage during development, with the award subsequently given to Blue Prince.
Both Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and Elden Ring are masterpieces deserving of recognition. Expedition 33 is our own Game of the Year thanks to its emotional storytelling and uniqueness, while Elden Ring earned high praise in our review for its stunning open world and its brutally challenging gameplay, typical of Dark Souls developer FromSoftware.
Expedition 33 is Sandfall Interactive’s first release, and nobody could have predicted its enormous success. In addition to reportedly winning over 400 GOTY awards, the game has also sold more than six million copies.
Sandfall Interactive has already begun work on its next project. While acknowledging the pressure that comes with Clair Obscur’s success, the studio isn’t willing to abandon its creative ethos in an attempt to please everyone.
The studio hasn’t revealed any details about its next game beyond teasing that it will be “crazy” and true to the studio’s DNA, but it’s likely to build on Clair Obscur, as the developer has confirmed Expedition 33 is only one story rather than the end of the franchise.
