Clair Obscur Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive is starting to work on their next game. The studio’s game director, Guillaume Broche, recently told outlets that the next game won’t be a bigger production because “it’s good to have limitations”. Now, other Sandfall Interactive personnel have revealed that the studio’s ethos won’t be swayed by trying to please everyone.
Speaking to Edge magazine for issue 419 (via Gamesradar), Sandfall Interactive’s lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, admits that she’s “a bit of a people pleaser, so it’s always in the back of my mind that we have a lot of fans now, and they have certain expectations and certain feelings towards the game”.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 was Sandfall Interactive’s first release. Not only did it receive the most nominations in Game Awards history, but it also took home the prize of Game of the Year. Total sales for Expedition 33 have also reportedly exceeded six million, and Expedition 33 won Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards, a prize voted for by the general public instead of just a selected committee of industry professionals.
While aware of the pressure that Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s success creates for Sandfall Interactive’s next game, Svedberg-Yen says, “we need to trust our instincts and continue to trust the vision behind the studio”.
The lead writer explains, “Creatively, we’ve always let our North Star be our own personal taste in terms of what we think is cool, what it is we enjoy and want to see, [and] I’ve seen too many TV shows and books be swayed trying to please a lot of people, and in the process you end up losing the heart of what’s there”.
Expedition 33 developer’s next game is likely more Clair Obscur
Sandfall Interactive hasn’t revealed its next game. However, it’s likely that it will be more Clair Obscur as the developer has confirmed that Clair Obscur is a franchise and that Expedition 33 is just one story.
Expedition 33 director, Guillaume Broche, first started teasing the studio’s next game in October 2025. Broche promises fans that Sandfall Interactive has “a lot of very good ideas,” while also revealing that the studio won’t grow too much because they “want to remain very small and agile with a strong creative vision”.
Lastly, the director says that Sandfall wants to work on games that feel “very unique and artsy,” as this approach to making games is a crucial part of the studio’s “DNA”.
Assuming we are getting more Clair Obscur in the future, it’s likely that Sandfall Interactive’s next game will be independent of Expedition 33, similar to the Final Fantasy franchise, where each mainline installment takes place in a unique setting with a new group of characters.
In another interview, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen confirmed that neither of the multiple endings for Expedition 33 is canon, further suggesting that Sandfall Interactive doesn’t plan to revisit protagonists Maelle and Verso.
While Sandfall Interactive is starting to work on their next game, we are not at the end of Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s run of award wins, as the game is part of the BAFTA Game Awards 2026 GOTY longlist.
