Clair Obscur Expedition 33 dominated The Game Awards on December 11, winning the coveted Game of the Year prize. Expedition 33 is developed by French-based indie developer, Sandfall Interactive, and, following the studio’s achievement, the current French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the game as a “Great pride for Montpellier and for France”.
In an Instagram message automatically translated, Macron recognizes that Clair Obscur Expedition 33 winning Game of the Year is a “historic first for a French title”. The French President adds, “Congratulations to the Sandfall Interactive team. For future generations and those that follow!”

Heading into The Game Awards, Expedition 33 was already the most nominated game in history after surpassing The Last of Us Part 2 with a total of 13 nominations, including Players’ Voice. Now Expedition 33 has the most wins in Game Awards history, too, after winning nine awards, including Game of the Year, Best RPG, Best Narrative, Best Music, and Best Performance with Jennifer English as Maelle.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s celebratory tour may not be over yet, as it is nominated for Best Indie at the Indie Game Awards on December 18. It is also part of the BAFTA Game Awards 2026 longlist for Game of the Year, alongside Dispatch.
Out of nowhere, Sandfall Interactive has become one of the most exciting studios in the gaming industry. They are starting to work on their next game, and they promise fans it is “crazy” and true to the studio’s DNA. We won’t see it for a long time, and it hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s likely more Clair Obscur as Sandfall confirms Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the franchise, it’s just “one of the stories” Sandfall wanted to tell.
