The rumours have stemmed from a comment made by Bill Gates back in June, where he commented that Microsoft were looking at the possibility of future Xbox 360 consoles having an HD-DVD drive. At a conference where Microsoft announced they would be partnering with Toshiba to produce HD-DVD players, Bill Gates said:

The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today’s DVD format. We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.âââ€Â¬?

It is this quote that has sparked the recent rumours of an HD-DVD Xbox 360. Even if the Xbox 360 is eventually released with an HD-DVD drive, it is highly unlikely that the high capacity media will ever be used for game discs as this would prevent early adopters from playing the game. An HD-DVD console would probably be sold alongside the existing model, but at a higher price.
