Andrew Spinks' Terraria, the smash hit indie block-building game, is to be released for Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN in early 2013, publisher 505 Games has announced.

Originally released in 2011 on PC, Terraria is a side-scrolling, action-adventure sandbox game, with an emphasis on crafting and exploration.

"The block-building genre has taken the world by storm and Terraria has garnered a massive following through its increased focus on adventure and discovery," said Tim Woodley, head of global brand for 505 Games. "We're looking forward to bringing an already hugely successful experience to a brand new console audience and we can't wait for the existing Terraria fan base to experience all-new content."

Additional features for the console versions are promised, but no details have been given at this time. Engine Software is handling the port.

Can't praise Terraria enough. Great game! I'm very much looking forward to it's spiritual successor "StarBound" (thanks for telling me/ us about that one Clockpunk).

Not sure how well the port will work though. Mechanically it will be completely sound. But the mouse controls would be relegated to the left stick which could awkward when mining or using the grappling. Everything is so small in the game that the precision needed to position tools on specific blocks could lost. Making it be much more laboured to it needs to be.

360 degree aiming on 2D side scrolling games has always been a problem for with analogue stick for me anyway.

Awesome, this game is great, I hope it comes out early 2013 and they fix multiplayer, much like Minecraft for 360. Trying to play Terraria multiplayer on PC was even harder than Minecraft.

Hoody hoo! I love Terraria, but it is a bugger to play on the Mac. This shall most certainly be a Day One-er, for me. I wonder if Minecraft 360 Edition's sales figures spurred on the decision any... ;)

For fellow formites with access to an iOS device, if you like Terraria, or for a sample of what it is 'kind of like', Junk Jack cannot be recommended highly enough.
