Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has dropped the greatest hint yet that a sequel to 2010 open-world hit Red Dead Redemption could be in the works.

Speaking during Take-Two's Q1 FY14 earnings results last night, Zelnick stated that the publisher's goal is "to try to create permanent franchises", before referencing BioShock, Borderlands and Red Dead.

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises," said Zelnick, "that's the unique goal in the industry.

"Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises.

"Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example. And it's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example."

Take-Two, which owns Rockstar Games, has yet to announce a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, but previous comments from Rockstar have suggested a sequel may be in development.

Back in July last year, Rockstar asked fans to "stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series".

Red Dead Redemption sold 13 million copies within the first two years of release. Take-Two announced last night that BioShock Infinite and Borderlands 2 had each sold 4 million and 7 million units respectively.

Rockstar's next title, Grand Theft Auto 5, goes on sale on September 17.

Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games ever and I still to this day go back and play it from time to time. I would love a PC version of RDR.

I agree, bully was missed by a lot of people even the second time round, Bully University should happen, the different seasons that bully went through were fun too not enough games have season change in them. Wanna go back n play that again now, it had a great dark atmosphere and a story everyone could relate to in some way.

What we could be looking at is a next gen version of one of this gens best games but looking even better! I loved redemption but the thing is after playing for weeks on end and after hundreds of hours finally bringing the game to completion and enjoying every minute right to the very end (even through the credits which had great music), I haven't gone back to the main game. I was satisfied that it was over, I never once thought I can't wait for a sequel, I can't imagine it can do anything different or better than last time, look at Wild West films, there all the same, yeah they did the zombie DLC which again was great but wasn't anything new just shoved some undead into the red dead world. For example GTA can go to other cities in different era's for a massive setting change, red dead cant its limited to the American west in the Wild West era. GTA can add different vehicles, red dead could add a different colour horse, etc. its basically limited to what it's already done, and done too well to improve on. All they could do is bring it forward to modern day but wait thats already happened and flopped. Prove me wrong happily rockstar but to be honest it doesn't come across as a franchise just as a one off great success.

Well, this is depressing. "Permanent franchises" is just "cash-cow" but all dressed up.

Haven't Take Two/ Rockstar also recently made a new trade mark for the Bully franchise? With games like this on the table, I guess they could even afford not to port GTA V to next gen if they didn't want to. Potentially anyway.

Dave do you play with kids on red dead multiplayer...or is that just a battlefield thing?

Can they ever make a character as good as John Marston? Do you reckon they will stick with his son?

Would very much prefer Bully 2 to hit first.
