Republican governor Tim Pawlenty has singed into law SF 785. The law will come into effect from August 1 and will impose a $25 fine on minors who purchase a Mature or Adults Only rated video game. The retailer will not face any fine, but will be required to display a sign notifying customers of the fine.
The Entertainment Software Association is obviously against the new law and has announced its intent to file suit against Minnesota. ESA president Doug Lowenstein has expressed his disappointment, stating that “SF 785 is unnecessary and will restrict the First Amendment rights of Minnesota’s citizens.“
Fining children is certainly a different approach, but I can’t help but think it’s the parents and retailers who should be held responsible. Besides, how does a child go about paying such a fine?
