Naughty Dog won't boost Uncharted 4's frame rate to 60fps if it compromises the player's experience, game director Bruce Straley has explained.

Talking in the latest issue of EDGE, Straley confirmed that the team locked Uncharted 4's frame rate at 30fps for last month's demo, but revealed that the game is actually running "above 30" frames per second.

"We're actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo], Straley explained. "We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.'"

EDGE states that a debug station visible on the floor revealed that the game was running at 37fps.

All three PS3 Uncharted titles ran at 30fps. However, hopes that the upcoming PS4 release would run at 60fps were raised after community strategist Arne Meyer revealed that Naughty Dog would be targeting 1080p/60fps "with anything we're doing on this generation".

Last summer's PS4 re-release The Last of Us: Remastered ran at 1080p/60fps, up from the original game's 720p/30fps.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End launches exclusively on PS4 later this year.

Games aren't about cinematic experiences; especially not action.
What separates games from movies is interactivity from the player and when you have 30fps, it just degrades the experience. You don't get that visceral feeling you get with 60.

30fps is common because of the lowest common denominator only. Not because it is acceptable.

What I REALLY wanted out of this generation was less focus on hardware and more on software and infrastructure. Specifically cross platform interaction. The sooner we do away with the walled-gardens in multiplayer and socialising on these things the better.

Everybody is so down about this. 30fp is completely acceptable, as long as its solid. Down below in the comment somebody said they were hoping we would be passed this in the new generation, but 30fps is common for a more cinematic experience, I hope developers will always consider 30fps.

Agreed with all these comments. I mean, everyone know TLoU was crap because it was 30fps. Totally ruined any emersion.

Not running at 60fps DOES compromise the player experience!

The only games that aren't way worse at 30fps are games that don't require quick reactions(like card games). 30fps means your input is sluggish, making you slower to react to things. Plus the game isn't as smooth and that's just not nice.

Is something disturbing you. Don't take it so seriously. If you want a PS4 buy it, if you don't, buy an XB1. Everyone is happy. You don't sound happy.

Very wise. I'm glad Naughty Dog are keeping a cool head and refusing to overstretch. It would be a disaster if they pushed the PS4 too hard and ended up with a game full of screen tear, horrible pop-in and a jerky frame rate. If it has to be 30fps to give us fluid solid high quality imagery then so be it.

Personally I'm OK with 1080p locked 30fps rather than a lower res. Resolution is important in a story based exploration and adventure game where visual spectacle adds to the experience. Definitely don't want screen tear because that would just be a bust game.

Personally I could care less if it's 30fps, 60fps or anything in between so long as it's a good game and enjoyable.

It is telling that they talk about 'boosting' to 60fps implying that they STILL think 30fps is an acceptable speed. Perhaps this is just the PC-gamer in me speaking but we had this exact same debate with the 360 and PS3. I kinda hoped we'd be past it and the newer hardware would mean we could just assume 1080p/60fps would be standard on ALL platforms.

In other words, they can't.
