Thief coming to next-gen consoles & PC in 2014

"The master thief" returns in Eidos Montreal's franchise "reinvention".

The fourth game in Square Enix's stealth-action series Thief will release on PC, PlayStation 4 and "other next-generation consoles" in 2014, Square Enix has announced.

Thief - previously known as Thief 4 - is currently in development at Deus Ex: Human Revolution creators Eidos Montreal, and described by Square as a "reinvention of a franchise that helped define an entire genre of games".

The first-person adventure game rejoins Garrett in The City, a "shadowy world... ravaged with sickness and famine". A non-linear structure to mission design is promised, and Square claims that players will have "freedom to choose their path through the game's levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge".

Though Square has yet to officially release assets for the game, the first alleged screenshots of Thief appeared online yesterday.

"We're handling a precious gemstone with THIEF," said Stephane D’Astous, general manager at Eidos Montreal.

"Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence - which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos-Montréal - whilst also introducing THIEF to a brand new, next-generation, audience.

"Our goal is to deliver the fantasy of being Garrett, THE master thief, and we’re building this game around that core experience."
