PlayStation 4 racer DriveClub has been delayed until early 2014, Sony has confirmed.

The game had originally been due to launch alongside the console on November 29.

DriveClub: PS Plus Edition, a content-limited version of the game which had been expected to be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers at launch, has also been delayed.

To replace the title, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download shadow-puzzle-platformer Contrast free-of-charge instead and be offered access to an "Open Weekend" trial of Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer on December 28-29.

"SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of DRIVECLUB and DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014," Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida wrote in an update on PlayStation Blog. "DRIVECLUB will be a truly innovative, socially connected racing game, but the team requires more time in order to deliver on their vision — and I’m fully confident the game will surpass your expectations."

He continued: "We understand that the delay is disappointing news, but can assure you that the reason we have made this decision is to ensure that when DRIVECLUB launches, it will realize the next gen racing vision. And PlayStation 4 gamers will have no shortage of titles to play this year. At launch alone, we have Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, FIFA 14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, to name but a few, as well as the incredible list of Indie games coming to PS4. A broad portfolio of games will be available on PS4 before the end of the year, and with games such as Infamous Second Son, The Order 1886, Destiny, Watch Dogs and now DRIVECLUB coming next year, the strength of the software line-up on PS4 is unprecedented.

"DRIVECLUB is a really ambitious racing title and the game is looking stunning. The extra time we’re giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait."

The delay marks the second major setback for PlayStation 4 this week following Ubisoft's decision to push back key launch game Watch Dogs to spring 2014. It also means that Sony will now launch with just two AAA first-party titles: Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack.

PlayStation 4 launches in the UK on November 29.

I guess that all these companies hurried without thinking about the right release date... oh well.

Is there any reason to even bother grabbing a launch day console anymore? All the games apart from Knack and Killzone are cross gen anyway. If i had not already mostly paid for my PS4 i would be cancelling and waiting till next year. Such a disappointment.

I love my driving games and was looking forward to seeing how different Driveclub would be, but with Forza launching on Xbox One and NFS I have enough to play, anyway.

My issue now is that I was early on pre-ordering an Xbox One so got the FIFA one and can't swap for the free copy of Forza unless someone doesn't turn up or wants to swap with me at the midnight launch.

I'm getting a plain PS4 without the extras, though, to cut costs, so this is one less game I'll be getting as part of my PS+ at launch, though at least there's Contrast and the PS3 to PS4 ported games.

The fact is the people ranting about either console are a minority and the greater audience doesn't give a crap about any of these announcements, they'll will just rock up for their console of choice and buy COD or Battlefield depending on what their mates play.

DriveClub is just an unknown driving IP which hasn't had nearly enough coverage for the mass market. It's delay will mean nothing to them. If driving is their bag they'll just go with NFS instead.

From what I am seeing this news is enough for some to cancel their pre-orders. But where they going to go? Surely not the Xbox One, aren't these kinds of people all mad at MS too?

I know I took the mick but your sentiments are exactly right. Launching a sub par game would be far more damaging than delaying.

How can that be confusing? If you ordered a pack with Driveclub in (the full version, not the PS+ free cut down one) surely they need to send out emails to customers to help them choose something else?

GAME seems to be super confused at this time. They said they will be sending out emails with more details to anyone who ordered a ps4 with driveclub. See my forum post for more details.

I had concerns about how ready this was going to be for launch after the E3 showing and feared it was going to be rushed out the door with it being named as a day 1 PS Plus game. Glad common sense prevails... unlike in my work where the deadline for my development has been brought forward to a more unrealistic date.

This sucks but my launch game is going to be Killzone: Shadow Fall anyway, I was only going to download the free version of this so I' not too bothered. Still disappointing.
