DICE is building Mac OS X compatibility into future versions of its Frostbite engine, a job ad for the company has revealed.

According to the ad, the Battlefield 3 developer, which created Frostbite 2, is currently putting together a team to bring the engine to Apple's platform, and "deliver an engine as great on OS X as it is on Windows and traditional console platforms".

Parent company EA appears keen to muscle in on the Mac gaming market.

Last week, the publisher launched an open alpha trial of its Origin service on Mac. SimCity, which releases on PC on March 8, is also due for release on Mac at a later date.

As well as expanding onto Mac, previously revealed that DICE is working on porting its engine to mobile platforms.

Frostbite 2 has been used to power multiple EA titles, including Battlefield 3, Need For Speed: The Run and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. It's also being used in upcoming titles Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel and Command & Conquer, and is expected to be used in future versions of Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Battlefield.

This is [potentially] great news!

The lack of Mac titles (even on Steam) has meant that i've stuck to my Xbox for a long while... hopefully this'll help bring me back to the trusty mouse and keyboard!

Being a BattleField fan and a Mac user, this is good news. I wonder, will DICE still calls it Frostbite when ported to Mac OS X?

Honestly, though, I can't see good market in this move. I think DICE can make more profits when it successfully ported Frostbite to mobile devices. But let's wait and see what happens..

Give me access to the Mass Effect trilogy on mac and I'll happily buy it. I've only played the second and enjoyed it a lot.
