The price cut on Wii U hardware has failed to boost sales to the level expected, retailer ShopTo has suggested.

Speaking in the latest issue of MCV, ShopTo's purchasing director James Rowson told the magazine that the retailer had "taken the decision to reduce the price of the Basic Wii U to test the market and assess the impact of a price change for a short period of time."

ShopTo is currently selling the Basic console for £189.95, 24 per cent cheaper than the unit's initial £249.99 price. Other retailers, including Amazon, GameStop and Asda, also made similar reductions.

However, despite the lower price, the reduction "has resulted in a smaller than desired increase in sales at this stage".

Other retailers also told MCV of their Wii U woes, with a 'top buyer at one of the UK's biggest games retailers' telling the magazine that it is "looking to reduce [Wii U space] slightly but must admit [Nintendo's] silence on strategy is deafening at the moment.

"They've got to do something otherwise it is GameCube all over again."

Wii U has struggled to maintain momentum following its launch last November, with hardware unit sales in the US rumoured to be around one-fifth of the Xbox 360's.

Rather than setting an RRP itself, Nintendo lets retailers settle on a price point based on cost.

"We'll be speaking to our retailers directly over the next few weeks to take them through our plans for building Wii U momentum over the course of 2013," a Nintendo spokesperson told MCV in response.

"We have a strong and broad line-up of software launching this year and we look forward to updating - and exciting - our partners over the coming weeks."

Come to think of it, I didn't see NFS in my local Grainger either. Although, it is on the eShop at a less than expected £44.99. Has it gone digital only?

£199.99 now for Premium Wii U and Zombi U in HMV now. They won't last long.

It doesn't help when I go to pick up my pre-ordered NFS Most Wanted Wii U game at GAME and they haven't had any on (or in the warehouse).

They didn't have the Monster Hunter Wii U/3DS BUNDLE either, just the separate games.

That's interesting, I was basically in the same situation as you where I had one and couldn't find much for it. Things have obviously changed a lot, as they can, so maybe I was a mug for selling mine. Oh well :)

I was looking other day and couldn't find one with the decent hard drive (premium pack) for less than £299 I only want 2 games for it zombiu and Lego city so won't be paying anyway near that much for it I'm afraid I would pick it up at £150 but that will just not happen will it.

Yes 2.5D Metroid game for 3DS YES!! MAKE IT HAPPEN NINTENDO!

But yeah back on topic. Nintendo may not do the best this gen, but (and have shown already) know how to turn things around. It just takes time and a decent E3.

Mate, I'm surprised by the 3DS. When it came out I bought one. It wasn't great. The battery was poor, the 3D was hit and miss, the eShop didn't exist and the games were diabolical. I sold it within a couple of months.

About 5 months ago I decided to pick up an XL. There were a few games out that had been receiving pretty good reviews and it would be foolish for a gamer of my age, having played the amount of games that I have played to ignore these titles. Besides, the screen was now bigger and the battery problem (it was a serious problem) had apparently been solved. Oh, and the XL size solved the hand cramps that I imagine most western adults get when playing the standard 3DS.

So here we are, 5 months later and I'm convinced its the best console on the market to own right now. It's picking up pace at exactly the right moment. The current gen of HD console games are slowing, or at least becoming generic sequels while publishers rinse the last out of engines and franchises. The 3DS on the other hand is gaining momentum at an incredible rate and is providing me so much entertainment that my PS3 hasn't even had a look in. Theres a handful of incredible gaming experiences to be had on it. That doesn't seem like a lot, but it's kept me going for about 5 months and I'm still excited by the console. I'm also completely sold on 3D. Personally I play every game at full 3D level, which seems to oppose most reviews who tend to play at half. Maybe thats an XL thing.

I'm more excited for the future of the 3DS than any other console right now.. AND WHERE THE HELL IS THE 3DS METROID GAME?!!?? (Is that getting annoying yet?)

Apologies for diverting the Wii-U chat. Just seemed appropriate timing.

It's Nintendo, we're all going to be saying the same thing about their main consoles forever - needs more games.

Like everyone has said games games Games GAMES!! Whilst the first half of the year is only somewhat salvageable now with monster hunter and lego city coming, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo announce a lot at E3, and release a good chunk in the months after June.

Sure we all know that the nextbox and PS4 will be at E3, but so does Nintendo. This year more then ever they need to steal the show for Wii.

The 3DS can handle itself this year. It'g got good games coming and is comfortably out doing it's rival. Nintendo now need to re-evaluate their focus.

If I had a Wii-U I would so get Deus Ex: HR Directors Cut even though I have played it countless times.
Do think there should be a new game + mode so you can get all the upgrades.

But yeah it needs more games if they want me!

Maybe a better choice of words would have been "most desired console", going from sales figures. It is comfortably outperforming everything else.

I mean I know it's selling well, especially in Japan, but I'm not sure it's become a must-own console.
